  1. Abebe Bikila of Ethiopa was the first black
  2. African to win an Olympic marathon and the
  3. first runner to win two consecutive Olympic
  4. marathons. At the 1960 Games, in Rome,
  5. Italy, the 28-year-old Abebe was an
  6. unknown runner whom no one expected to
  7. win. Nevertheless, Abebe, who ran the
  8. Olympic marathon barefooted through the
  9. paved streets, ran the fastest marathon ever
  10. and took the gold. In 1964, Abebe ran the
  11. Olympic marathon again. Not only were the
  12. other runners ready for him this time, but
  13. just 40 days before the Olympics, Abebe
  14. had had his appendix removed. Abebe still
  15. won the marathon, by 4 minutes, 18
  16. seconds. Once again, he ran the fastest
  17. marathon time ever! Only this time, Abebe
  18. wore shoes.
